Smoky, dark red, bottlebrush flowers that resemble foxtails, emerge in mid to to late summer, turning brown in autumn and often lasting through winter. These blooms make excellent cut flowers for fresh or dried arrangements. ‘Red Head’ is an award-winning, clump-forming perennial grass with gracefully arching narrow green leaves. Deep green in summer, the foliage turns gold in autumn and buff in winter. We love to see this planted with Verbena bonariensis, Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’ and Echinacea purpurea.
- Garden care: When planting add a scoop of well-rotted organic matter and perhaps some horticultural grit to improve drainage. In autumn, add a generous layer of mulch to provide an insulating layer around the roots and leave the top growth for winter protection and interest. Cut back the previous year’s growth each spring to ground level.
