A graceful, spreading ornamental cherry tree unveiling a breathtaking floral display of delicate, pale pink double blossoms surrounding distinctive green centres that dangle from long stems hanging below the branches like a pink parasol in mid to late spring. The foliage adds seasonal interest, emerging in a dark copper bronze before maturing to green in summer and turning lovely shades of yellow and orange in autumn. One of the most stunning varieties in the Matsumae group of Japanese cherries, ‘Hanagasa’ features long-stemmed, abundant blooms that cascade from its open, broad form for a romantic, dramatic look perfect for medium to large sized gardens.
When siting your ornamental cherry, select a spot that is sheltered from strong winds to protect the delicate blossoms. Stake your new tree to anchor it while the roots establish. Water thoroughly at planting and keep the soil moist for the first year by watering regularly, especially during hot, dry spells. After planting, maintain a weed-free area around the base of the tree, and use a tree guard if rabbits or deer are an issue. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, cutting back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
