This is one of the most popular double-flowering cherry trees available. In spring the tree is laden with large double, deep pink flowers shortly before the bronze foliage appears, transitioning to a rich dark green. In autumn these dark green leaves turn bronzy orange before they fall. ‘Kanzan’ is a wonderful multi-season tree for a medium-sized garden, it’s perfect for avenue planting – or as a specimen tree in the lawn.
If you’ve purchased a bare-root tree, it should be planted out as soon as as you are able to and conditions allow, avoiding waterlogged or frozen soil. If you can’t plant your bare-root plant straight away, we recommend temporarily planting it in the ground, or into a large pot filled with compost. It will need to be secured to a wall or fence to avoid toppling over. When planting containerised and bare-root trees incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Cut back any dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
