A majestic deciduous elm, rapidly ascending to a towering 30m at maturity (25-30 years under ideal conditions). Its oval, dark green leaves transform into a brilliant golden-yellow in autumn with modest reddish-brown flowers preceding brown winged fruits. Notably, it boasts remarkable resistance to Dutch elm disease, ensuring its hardiness in landscapes and also serves as a crucial habitat for the rare UK native White-letter Hairstreak butterfly, whose numbers saw a decline in the late 1960s due to the outbreak of the lethal strain of the disease. With its upright habit and proven disease resistance, ‘Wingham’ stands as a resilient and ecologically significant addition to replace elms in the landscape.
It requires very little pruning, however if it does get too large for its allotted space, it can be cut back hard.
